There Is Help For Families Affected by Addiction

Addiction is irrational. The addict’s brain no longer functions normally.  Their decisions bypass the portions of the brain that handle risk, priorities, and principles. Instead their decisions are driven by a compulsion to consume that which harms them. If addiction was rational, the behavior would stop when it harms themselves or others.

Fortunately, there are medical professionals that specialize in helping the addicted restore healthy brain function and reestablish their lives in a healthy manner.  When a loved one will not seek help, a trained and professional interventionist can successfully guide a meeting that convinces the individual to make the rational decision to get needed help.

Interventions

A facilitated family meeting has multiple goals:

· What brought you to this point, to get your loved one into treatment.

· To educate the family so they will have an improved understanding of the disease of addiction,  available solutions, and how to best help the loved one. Changing the way the family responds to Substance Use Disorders for future generations.

· Start the family system onto a healthy and healing path.

Our team, which usually includes two interventionists, works with the family to create an intervention plan which is most likely to lead to the loved one’s healthy recovery from addiction. During the pre-intervention period the family will receive education on addiction and recovery, will participate in creating an intervention plan, write letters, go over contingencies, select an appropriate treatment path, develop a plan to overcome obstacles to successful treatment, and work out the logistics of enrolling the loved in their treatment program.

Shame is not a useful tool in helping loved one’s out of an addiction crisis. The methods we employ are based on love and understanding with goal of beginning the healing process for both the family and the person in crisis.

Once a loved one enters their treatment plan, we will provide the affiliated addiction specialists with a report to help them customize a successful treatment program for your loved one. We also remain available to answer questions about the treatment process and to provide coaching to the family as the loved one exits treatment and enters their recovery path.
